Threads Users Can Now Chat With Meta AI in Their DMs
Meta is rolling out Meta AI inside Threads DMs globally, allowing users to privately chat with the AI assistant and share posts, images, links and videos.
Meta is bringing its Meta AI chatbot directly into Threads’ private messages, giving users another way to interact with the company’s artificial intelligence assistant without leaving the social network.
The company said Monday that Meta AI is rolling out within Threads DMs globally. While users in select markets have already been able to interact with Meta AI through public Threads posts, the new integration allows conversations with the assistant to take place privately.
The move expands Meta’s strategy of embedding its AI assistant throughout its family of apps. Meta AI is already available through direct messages on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Meta AI can analyse content shared in Threads DMs.
Threads users can share posts, images, links and videos directly with Meta AI and ask questions about that content. They can also continue conversations with follow-up questions to explore subjects in greater detail.
By making the chatbot more accessible inside Threads, Meta is giving users a way to search for information, explore topics and receive recommendations without switching to third-party AI services such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini.
Meta is also continuing to test Meta AI within Threads’ public feeds in a limited number of markets. The company said it is reviewing feedback from those tests before deciding whether to expand the public integration more widely.
Users who prefer to see fewer AI-generated responses in their Threads feed have several controls available. They can mute the @meta.ai account, select “Not interested” on Meta AI posts or hide AI replies that appear beneath their own posts.
The expansion further positions Threads as more than a social feed competing with X. By integrating Meta AI into private conversations, Meta is building information discovery and AI-powered recommendations directly into the platform while keeping users within its broader ecosystem.
