WhatsApp Expands Web App With Voice and Video Calling

WhatsApp is expanding its calling features by allowing users to make and receive voice and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need to switch to the mobile or desktop app.

Previously, calling was available only through WhatsApp’s smartphone application and native desktop client. With the latest update, users can place and answer calls from the browser-based version while accessing the same call history and favourite contacts available on other platforms.

The web experience also includes features such as screen sharing and in-call reactions, bringing it closer to the functionality already offered in the desktop application.

New tools improve call management.

Meta is introducing several additional upgrades to WhatsApp calling. Users can now transfer an ongoing call between devices without disconnecting. For example, a call started on WhatsApp Web or desktop can be moved seamlessly to a smartphone.

The platform is also adding waiting rooms for group calls. Hosts using a shared call link can approve or reject participants before they join by enabling the "Require approval to join" option, giving users greater control over meetings and larger group conversations.

Better call quality and future updates

WhatsApp has also introduced background noise suppression to reduce unwanted sounds during calls in noisy environments. In addition, video calls will begin streaming in high definition much sooner, reducing the delay users sometimes experienced before HD quality became available.

The update follows WhatsApp's recent rollout of username reservations. Once WhatsApp usernames become widely available, they are expected to make it easier for people to connect and place calls without relying solely on phone numbers.
