ChatGPT’s Mobile App Hits New Milestone of $3B in Consumer Spending
ChatGPT has reached a significant milestone of $3 billion in consumer spending on mobile apps since its launch in May 2023, with $2.48 billion spent in 2025 alone. The app's rapid growth has surpassed that of other popular apps such as TikTok, Disney+, and HBO Max. ChatGPT is exploring new revenue streams, including an app store and potential ads, while its competitor Grok is seeing similar growth.
ChatGPT has reached a significant milestone of $3 billion in worldwide consumer spending on mobile as of this week, according to estimates from app intelligence provider Appfigures. This figure represents total spending on iOS and Android devices since the app's launch in May 2023, when it was initially available only on iOS.

Notably, the bulk of this spending occurred in 2025, with consumers worldwide spending an estimated $2.48 billion on the ChatGPT mobile app. This represents a 408% year-over-year increase from the $487 million spent in 2024. In 2023, ChatGPT's first year of availability, it earned $42.9 million; in 2024, it grew by an impressive 1,036% to $487 million.

These numbers reflect a sharp rise in consumer adoption compared to other popular apps. For context, it took ChatGPT 31 months to reach $3 billion in consumer spending, while the top earner, TikTok, took 58 months. ChatGPT also surpassed popular streaming apps such as Disney+ and HBO Max, which reached the $3 billion milestone in 42 months and 46 months, respectively.
xAI's Grok is seeing a similar revenue trajectory compared to ChatGPT among AI competitors. Released in late 2023 to X Premium Plus subscribers and more widely available since last year, Grok's revenue pace closely mirrors ChatGPT's cumulative revenue at the same point after it began monetising.

While the $3 billion in consumer spending represents significant growth, it is only one measure of AI app adoption and long-term revenue potential. ChatGPT's mobile customers are subscribing to premium services, including $20 per month ChatGPT Plus and $200 per month ChatGPT Pro for advanced users. However, AI apps can generate revenue through developer offerings and potentially through ads. Recently, ChatGPT launched its own app store, which it suggests could be monetised in the future.
Meanwhile, Google is exploring ways to transition its strong search ad business to AI-powered search, placing ads in AI Mode, AI Overviews, AI shopping, and the increasingly AI-powered Discover page, among other things.
Anthropic, another AI company, is reportedly on track to generate $70 billion in revenue by 2028, focusing on the business market.
