Google introduces AI-powered Skills in Chrome to save and reuse workflows

Google is expanding the artificial intelligence capabilities of its Chrome browser by introducing a new feature called Skills, the company announced on Tuesday. The feature is designed to let users save and reuse their preferred AI prompts, enabling them to use them across different web pages without having to retype them each time.

The new capability builds on Google’s integration of its Gemini AI into Chrome, which has been rolled out alongside increasing competition in the browser space from offerings such as Atlas by OpenAI, Comet by Perplexity AI, and Dia by The Browser Company.

Gemini already enables users to interact with web pages by asking questions, summarising content, or performing various tasks. With the addition of Skills, users can now create reusable AI prompts that can be triggered repeatedly with a single action.

For example, Google explained that if a user frequently asks Gemini to recommend vegan alternatives while browsing recipe websites, they can save that prompt as a Skill and apply it across different pages without repeating the request.

To use the feature, users can save an AI prompt as a Skill directly from their chat history. Once saved, the Skill can be activated within Gemini in Chrome by typing a forward slash ( / ) or by clicking the plus sign ( + ) button. The selected Skill will then run on the current web page and can also be applied to any additional tabs the user has chosen.

Google noted that these Skills are fully editable, allowing users to adjust or refine them as needed.

During early testing, the company observed that users applied Skills in areas such as health and wellness — for example, calculating protein macros in recipes — as well as for comparing products while shopping, and for reviewing and summarising long documents.

To make the feature more accessible, Google is also launching a built-in Skills library that provides ready-made workflows across categories like productivity, shopping, recipes, budgeting, and more. Users can add these prebuilt Skills to their collection and customise them further by editing the underlying prompts.

As with other Gemini-powered actions in Chrome, the Skills feature includes safeguards. Users will be prompted to confirm certain actions, such as sending an email or adding an event to a calendar, before they are executed.

The rollout of Skills begins today for desktop Chrome users who are signed in to their Google accounts. Initially, the feature will only be available when the browser language is set to English (US).
