Amazon shifts podcast strategy toward full-scale monetization

Amazon has significantly reshaped its podcasting approach over the past six months, reflecting a broader push toward monetisation, according to reporting from The New York Times.

In August 2025, the company carried out layoffs affecting more than 100 employees within its podcast studio, Wondery. At the time, Amazon maintained it was not shutting down the .studio. While the Wondery brand continues to exist, its structure and operations have undergone major changes.

According to the report, Amazon fundamentally reorganised the business. Audio-only podcast content is now managed under Audible. At the same time, a newly formed division called Creator Services focuses on talent-driven, on-camera productions featuring personalities such as Dax Shepard, Keke Palmer, and Jason Kelce alongside Travis Kelce.

As part of this strategy, Amazon is expanding content ecosystems around popular shows. For instance, the company is building what it describes as an “expanding universe” around the Kelce brothers’ podcast “New Heights.” This includes monetisation initiatives that extend well beyond traditional advertising. A dedicated section called Kelce Clubhouse allows fans to purchase show-related merchandise, watch the documentary “Kelce,” and shop for curated items for football viewing experiences.

Matt Sandler, general manager of Creator Services, explained that the goal is to merge content and commerce into a unified experience, emphasising a model in which entertainment and shopping are closely integrated.

While other creators and platforms are also exploring commerce-driven strategies, the report notes that Amazon’s approach stands out due to the extent of its internal restructuring to achieve this shift.
