Apple buys MotionVFX to strengthen the video editing ecosystem
Apple acquires MotionVFX, a popular video-editing software company, to enhance Final Cut Pro and expand its professional video-production capabilities.
Apple has acquired MotionVFX, a company known for developing plug-ins, templates, and advanced features for Final Cut Pro, Apple’s professional video editing software. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.
“We are extremely excited to share that MotionVFX is joining the Apple team to continue to empower creators and editors to do their best work,” the company said in a statement posted on its website. “For over 15 years, we’ve been on a mission to create world-class, visually inspiring content and effects for video editors. From the very beginning, we’ve been all about quality, ease of use, and great design. These are also the values that we admire most in Apple’s products, and we’re thrilled to be able to embrace them together.”
Founded in 2009 and based in Warsaw, MotionVFX offers subscription plans starting at $29 per month that provide access to a wide range of professional-grade tools, visual effects, and design templates for video editing. With the acquisition, Apple is expected to integrate MotionVFX’s capabilities more deeply into its own software ecosystem.
The move could also strengthen Apple’s competitive position against Adobe Premiere Pro and the broader Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
Earlier this year, in January, Apple introduced Creator Studio, a subscription package that bundles six creative applications along with premium content for its iWork suite. Priced at $12.99 per month or $129 annually, the bundle includes Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Pixelmator Pro on both Mac and iPad, as well as Motion, Compressor, and MainStage on Mac. It also offers enhanced content for Keynote, Pages, and Numbers. By bringing MotionVFX into its portfolio, Apple appears to aim further to enhance the appeal of its Creator Studio offering and attract a broader base of creative professionals.
Apple’s services division has become a significant contributor to the company’s overall growth. In its most recent fiscal year, services accounted for more than 26% of total revenue, up from just 8.5% in 2015.
