Apple is introducing a new option for App Store developers to attract more subscribers through lower-priced plans tied to longer commitments. Announced on Monday, the feature enables customers to pay for auto-renewing subscriptions monthly while committing to a full 12-month term. This approach enables developers to offer discounted pricing in exchange for more predictable, long-term revenue streams.

The update reflects a strategy that many developers have already been using within their apps. It has been common practice for apps to highlight a reduced monthly cost when promoting annual subscriptions, emphasising the savings over paying month-to-month. For users hesitant to commit to a yearly plan upfront, a lower effective monthly rate often influences their decision.

With this move, Apple is formalising that approach within the App Store ecosystem. By doing so, the company can also introduce clearer guidelines on how subscription pricing is presented, ensuring that users are not misled about the actual cost or structure of these offers.

At launch, however, the new subscription option will not be available in the United States or Singapore. Apple did not provide a detailed explanation, but the exclusion of the U.S. is likely related to ongoing legal proceedings stemming from the company’s dispute with Epic Games over App Store policies and subscription-related charges. The company may be avoiding additional complexity until those legal matters are resolved. Singapore’s absence may relate to its advanced payments ecosystem and strong consumer protection regulations.

Customers who opt into these subscriptions will be able to review detailed information before committing, including how payments are structured and how cancellations work. Even though users can cancel at any time, monthly payments will continue through the agreed 12-month term, as they have already committed to the full subscription period.

Apple also stated that users will have clear tracking of their subscription status in their Apple Account, including how many payments have been completed and how many remain. In addition, the company will send reminder emails and optional push notifications to alert users ahead of renewal dates, helping them stay informed about upcoming charges.

While the new option offers customers a more affordable way to access subscriptions, it also introduces the possibility of longer commitments that may not always be actively managed. Because these plans automatically renew, users who forget to cancel before the renewal date could find themselves entering another 12-month cycle.

Developers will be able to configure and test this new subscription model through App Store Connect and Xcode. The feature will be available globally to users running newer software versions, including iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 or later, as well as subsequent updates such as iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 released in May.
