ChatGPT Launches an App Store, Lets Developers Know It’s Open for Business
OpenAI has launched an app store within ChatGPT, allowing developers to submit their apps for review and publication. With major platforms such as Expedia, Spotify, and Canva already integrated, the move expands ChatGPT's capabilities, giving users more ways to interact directly with services through conversations. OpenAI's Apps SDK is in beta, and new apps are expected to roll out in the coming year.
App developers looking to launch their programs within ChatGPT can now submit them for review and potential publication, OpenAI announced on Wednesday. The company also introduced a new app directory within Chat’s tools menu, which has quickly been dubbed an “app store.”
In October, OpenAI announced the launch of apps within its chatbot, stating that this move would bring a broader suite of capabilities to ChatGPT users. Major platforms — including Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva — announced integrations that would allow users to access their services directly from ChatGPT conversations. Now, the company is opening up the field to a broader array of developers.
“Apps extend ChatGPT conversations by bringing in new context and letting users take actions like ordering groceries, turning an outline into a slide deck, or searching for an apartment,” the company said Wednesday.
OpenAI’s Apps SDK, still in beta, provides a toolkit for developers to create new experiences for ChatGPT users. Once developers are ready, they can submit their apps to the company’s OpenAI Developer platform, where they can track their app’s approval status. Several approved apps are expected to launch on ChatGPT in the coming year.
This is a significant step for OpenAI toward expanding the ChatGPT app ecosystem and providing users with more reasons to engage with the app and stay on it.
