WhatsApp Restores Accounts After Issue Put Users Under Review
WhatsApp says it has restored affected accounts after an issue mistakenly placed some users under review and temporarily blocked access.
WhatsApp says it has restored access to user accounts after an issue temporarily blocked some people’s accounts and placed them under review. The company acknowledged the problem after users reported being unexpectedly locked out of the messaging app for several hours.
Posts shared across X and Threads showed affected users receiving a message stating that their account activity and device information were being reviewed to ensure compliance withWhatsApp’ss Terms of Service. The notice said users would typically receive the outcome of the review within 24 hours.
With more than 3 billion monthly active users worldwide, even a limited disruption has the potential to affect a large number of people.
Meta confirms restoration efforts
Meta confirmed it was working to resolve the issue and restore access to impacted accounts. The company did not say what caused the problem or whether it was limited to specific countries or regions.
“We are always working to stay ahead of those trying to abuse our service and ban accounts to help keep other users safe. Sometimes we get this wrong, and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible to get people back to chatting. We’ve taken action to restore affected accounts,” a company spokesperson said.
Cause remains unknown
Meta did not provide additional details about why multiple accounts were simultaneously placed under review. The company also did not explain how many users were affected, but said it had taken action to restore impacted accounts after identifying the issue.
