Disney+ launches ‘Verts,’ a TikTok-style short-form video feed
Disney+ is introducing “Verts,” a short-form vertical video feed designed to showcase highlights, clips, and trending moments in a TikTok-like format.
Disney+ has begun rolling out Verts, its new short-form video feed, to users in the U.S. through its mobile app. First unveiled in January, the TikTok-style Verts feed features scenes and standout moments from movies and TV shows available on Disney+.
Following the popularity of platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, Verts is intended to increase daily engagement and appeal to mobile-first audiences, while also helping users discover more content across the Disney+ library.
Users can access the feed through a new icon in the app’s navigation bar. As they scroll through the feed, they can add shows to their watchlist or jump straight into the full movie or series.
“With the latest streaming hits and an incredible catalogue spanning more than 100 years of storytelling, we’re making it easier for fans to discover what to watch next,” the company said in a blog post. “Verts offers a fun, fast way to explore that catalogue right from the moment users open the app. It brings the magic of Disney’s storytelling into a format that feels modern, engaging, and tailor-made for how fans already enjoy discovering video on mobile devices.”
Although Verts is initially focused on showcasing clips from content already available on Disney+, the company said it plans to expand the feature over time to include “content from creators that reflect our fandoms, plus other storytelling formats, content types, and personalised experiences.”
Disney said early testing conducted in August across both Disney+ and ESPb N indicated that Verts generated additional engagement. The company believes that the increase is tied to the “advanced algorithm” behind the Verts recommendation engine, which is designed to personalise content for each user. Disney’s investment in that algorithm reflects the importance of recommendation systems, especially given that much of TikTok’s success has been linked to the strength of its own recommendation model.
Disney+ is not the first streaming platform to experiment with vertical video. Netflix introduced a similar vertical feed last year, allowing users to scroll through clips from its original titles.
By bringing short-form video to their platforms, both Disney+ and Netflix aim to attract younger viewers who are more accustomed to consuming quick mobile clips than to traditional long-form programming, such as full TV episodes and movies. If those clips catch a user’s attention, the platforms hope that interest will translate into watching the full show or film that first drew them in.
