FBI probes malware found in games distributed on Steam
The FBI is investigating reports of malware hidden in games on Steam, raising concerns about platform security and risks to millions of PC gamers worldwide.
The FBI said Friday that it is investigating a hacker suspected of publishing multiple video games containing malware on Steam, the widely used PC gaming store.
In its announcement seeking possible victims who may have been infected, the agency identified the following games as being linked to the same cybercriminal over the past two years. According to the FBI, the titles were hosted on Steam but were embedded with malware: BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.
This is not the first time malicious actors have managed to distribute malware through Valve’s gaming marketplace. Last year, hackers published several games on Steam that also contained malware. Those titles were functional, though fairly basic. But their true purpose was to serve as a kind of Trojan horse, tricking gamers into installing malicious software on their computers. Steam eventually removed the games, but by then the issue had already affected an unknown number of users.
