Google launches Gemini AI integration in Chrome for users in India
Google has rolled out Gemini AI features in the Chrome browser for users in India, bringing built-in AI assistance for search, writing, and browsing tasks.
Google announced on Wednesday that it is expanding Gemini integration for Chrome to additional regions, including India, Canada, and New Zealand. The rollout will allow users to access Gemini in Chrome via a desktop sidebar, enabling them to ask Google’s AI chatbot questions about whatever content is visible on the screen, retrieve information from Gmail, Keep, Drive, and YouTube, and compare the contents of different tabs.
As part of this wider rollout, Gemini will also support more languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil, alongside English and other newly supported Chrome languages.
Google first brought Gemini to Chrome in the United States last September through a floating window. Earlier this year, the company followed that up by introducing Gemini tools built into a sidebar.
Users who receive access to the feature will notice an “Ask Gemini” icon in the tab bar. They can activate it on any tab to ask questions, summarise what they are viewing, or even generate a quiz to understand a subject better. Google said Gemini can also work across multiple tabs. That means users can refer to multiple tabs at the same time to find answers, which could be especially useful when comparing products to shop for or tickets to purchase for a trip.
Gemini can also connect with a variety of tools, pull in user information, and deliver more personalised responses. It can also link to Gmail, Maps, Calendar, YouTube, and other Google apps to provide contextual answers. For example, users can compose an email directly through Gemini in Chrome’s sidebar and send it to someone without ever leaving the current window. Users can also ask Gemini to summarise a YouTube video and provide the main takeaways along with timestamp markers. The assistant is additionally capable of helping schedule meetings or giving users a rundown of their day.
Users will also be able to access Google’s Nano Banana 2 generative AI tool directly through Gemini in Chrome for image transformations. For example, someone shopping for furniture could upload a photo of their room and ask the assistant to transform the image to show how a particular item might look in that space.
Google said that, along with desktop support, it is also introducing Gemini in Chrome for iOS in India. When the feature becomes available, users will find the option in the address bar through a page tools icon.
In January, Google introduced more advanced agentic capabilities for U.S.-based AI Pro and AI Ultra users, allowing Gemini to take control of the browser and complete tasks on a user’s behalf. However, the company is not including that functionality in this latest expansion for users in India, New Zealand, and Canada.
