Google Unveils Android 17 with Advanced Multitasking and Expanded Gemini AI Features
Google has launched Android 17 with powerful multitasking tools, enhanced privacy features, improved security, and expanded Gemini AI capabilities, bringing a smarter and more productive Android experience to compatible devices.
Google officially rolled out the final version of Android 17 on Tuesday, alongside Wear OS 7 for smartwatches. The latest operating system is arriving first on Google’s Pixel lineup. It is accompanied by a new Pixel Drop that introduces support for several of the company’s newest AI models, including the music-generation model Lyria 3, the multimodal Gemini Omni, and enhanced speech-to-speech translation powered by AudioLM for the Pixel 10a.
The release further highlights Google’s strategy of positioning Android and Pixel devices as the primary showcase for its latest artificial intelligence innovations. While Apple is preparing to introduce major AI improvements to Siri and iOS 27 later this year, Google is focusing Android 17 on expanding Gemini’s role across creativity, communication, productivity, and everyday mobile experiences.
As part of the latest Pixel Drop, Android Quick Share is gaining compatibility with Apple’s AirDrop on older Pixel 8a and Pixel 9a devices, making cross-platform file transfers easier. Gemini Omni also introduces conversational video-editing capabilities, allowing users to modify videos using natural-language prompts. Meanwhile, Lyria 3 enables users to generate original music using text prompts or reference images directly within the Gemini application. Pixel 10a users will also benefit from improved speech-to-speech translation powered by Google’s AudioLM technology.
Google is introducing several additional phone features as well. Users can now record personalised outgoing audio greetings for callers when they are unavailable to answer the phone, while the “Take a Message” feature is expanding to additional international markets.
The latest Pixel Drop also extends emergency detection capabilities to the Pixel Watch. If the wearable detects a serious car crash, a hard fall, or even a loss of pulse, it can automatically contact emergency services and notify the user’s selected emergency contacts.
Beyond artificial intelligence enhancements, Android 17 introduces a redesigned multitasking experience with the new Bubble Bar. This interface allows users to organise, reposition, and quickly reopen recently used applications through floating bubbles displayed at the bottom of the screen, helping simplify switching between multiple apps and improving workflow efficiency.
Content creators and social media users will also benefit from a new feature that records both the phone’s display and the selfie camera simultaneously. The capability makes it easier to produce reaction videos and tutorials for platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and other social media services.
Security and parental control features have also been strengthened. Android 17 introduces a “Mark as Lost” option within Find Hub, enhanced Live Threat Detection, additional device protection tools, and improved content filtering. Parents can now configure screen-time limits and content restrictions using a PIN without requiring a linked Google account.
Google has also introduced a dedicated gaming mode for foldable devices, featuring a balanced 50/50 screen layout paired with a dynamic on-screen game controller for a more immersive gaming experience.
Wear OS 7 also receives several meaningful upgrades. Pixel Watch users can now receive live updates mirrored directly from supported phone applications, and future compatibility with Google’s upcoming AI-powered smart glasses and connected accessories, such as headphones, has also been improved.
Looking ahead, Google confirmed that Wear OS will receive additional Gemini Intelligence features later this summer. These include the ability to generate personalised widgets simply by describing them in natural language, as well as a new “Personal Intelligence” experience that connects Gemini with Google apps and chat history to deliver more personalised assistance.
Google also says Wear OS users can expect up to 10% longer battery life, alongside new multi-step automation capabilities that will make everyday smartwatch interactions smarter and more efficient.
