OpenAI continues on its ‘code red’ warpath with new image generation model
OpenAI releases GPT Image 1.5: A faster, more precise image generator with improved editing and instruction-following capabilities. This update enhances post-production features for consistent edits and offers a more interactive creative experience for ChatGPT users.
OpenAI is rolling out a new version of ChatGPT Images, offering significant upgrades with GPT Image 1.5. This latest release promises improved instruction following, more precise image editing, and up to 4x faster image generation. The model, available to all ChatGPT users and via the API, marks OpenAI's continued effort to strengthen its position in the AI race.
This launch comes after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declared a "code red" in an internal memo, reacting to Google's market share following the success of its Gemini 3 model and Nano Banana Pro, which had topped the LMArena leaderboard across multiple benchmarks. While Google maintains its lead, OpenAI has been responding aggressively with new releases, such as GPT-5.2 and now GPT Image 1.5.
GPT Image 1.5 is designed to improve the user experience for image and video generation. It includes post-production features that offer more granular edit controls to maintain visual consistency, such as facial likeness, lighting, composition, and colour tone across edits. This addresses one of the key challenges of previous GenAI image models: iteration. In earlier versions, asking for a specific change, like adjusting a facial expression or altering lighting, would often result in the entire image being reinterpreted, leading to inconsistencies.
The update also introduces a dedicated,studio-like interface within ChatGPT. Users can now easily create and edit images in an environment that offers inspiration through trending prompts and preset filters. Additionally, OpenAI is introducing more visual elements to enhance the overall ChatGPT experience, such as including visuals in search queries to help with tasks like conversions or checking sports scores.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI's chief of applications, noted that these updates are intended to make it easier for users to shape their creations and access the tools they need quickly. The company aims to close the gap between what users want and their ability to bring it to life.
This marks a significant step forward in OpenAI's efforts to advance image generation capabilities and further establish itself as a leader in AI.
