Nscale Buys Anyscale as It Expands Across the AI Compute Stack

British AI neocloud Nscale is acquiring software startup Anyscale as it looks to capture a larger share of customers’ artificial intelligence spending and expand further across the AI computing stack.

Nscale is paying $1.65 billion for Anyscale, according to Bloomberg, which cited an anonymous source familiar with the deal.

Anyscale helps companies scale AI workloads across data centres and servers. The startup was founded by members of the team behind Ray, the open-source distributed computing framework for Python.

The company initially built a platform designed to help developers run projects requiring large amounts of computing power.

As generative AI gained momentum following the emergence of GPT-3, Anyscale expanded its focus toward infrastructure for large language models and other AI workloads.

Anyscale built its business around Ray

Anyscale now provides tools for training and serving large language models, data curation, inference, reinforcement learning and other computationally demanding AI tasks.

Its platform remains built around Ray and provides developers with tools covering orchestration, observability and workload management.

The acquisition fits Nscale’s strategy of vertically integrating more of the infrastructure required to build and operate AI systems.

Nscale has developed businesses spanning energy, data centres and orchestration software. Adding Anyscale gives the company another layer focused on managing and scaling the workloads running across that infrastructure.

“Together, Anyscale and Nscale can co-design the software layer and infrastructure beneath it, something that neither company could do as effectively by optimizing its layer alone,” Anyscale said in a statement.

Nscale is optimising $ 2 billion earlier this year

Nscale raised $2 billion in a Series C round in March that valued the company at $14.6 billion.

Its investors include Nvidia, Nokia, Blue Owl, Dell and Norwegian industrial company Aker.

The company has been using that capital, along with money raised through debt financing, to expand its computing infrastructure and data centre operations.

Nscale has secured partnerships involving compute and data centre capacity with companies including Microsoft, British Telecom, and Nordcraft.

The Anyscale acquisition gives Nscale more control over the software layer used to distribute and manage AI workloads across those computing resources.

Anyscale reports strong revenue growth

Anyscale was valued at $1.38 billion during its Series C funding round in 2022.

The company said its revenue increased 70% during its most recent quarter compared with the immediately preceding quarter.

Under Nscale’s ownership, Anyscale will continue operating under its existing brand and serving its current customers.

The startup’s approximately 200 employees will also join Nscale as part of the acquisition.

By combining Anyscale’s workload management software with its growing portfolio of data centres, energy infrastructure, and computing resources, NNscale is repositioning itself to control more of the technology enterprises use to run increasingly demanding AI applications.
