Roblox launches ‘Kids’ and ‘Select’ accounts to offer safer, age-appropriate gaming and chat
Roblox introduces Kids and Select accounts to provide age-appropriate access to games and chat, enhancing safety controls for younger users.
Roblox is rolling out new account categories to ensure children and younger teens have access to age-appropriate games and communication features, the company announced on Monday.
This update follows the platform’s earlier move in January to make age verification mandatory for anyone who wants to use chat features. The same age-verification system will now determine which type of account a user receives. Under the updated system, users who do not complete the age check will be limited to a curated set of games designed for younger audiences.
Children between the ages of five and nine will automatically be assigned to a “Roblox Kids” account, while users aged nine to 15 will receive a “Roblox Select” account. Anyone aged 16 or older will continue to use a standard Roblox account. However, access to “Restricted Content” — which may include strong violence, romantic elements, explicit language, and similar themes — will remain limited to users who are 18 or older.
The rollout of these new account types is scheduled to begin globally in early June. Roblox has also stated that existing users will be given a transition window to complete the age-verification process and be placed into the appropriate category.
For those using Roblox Kids accounts, gameplay will be limited to titles labelled with “Minimal” or “Mild” content ratings. These categories include experiences that may feature occasional mild violence, light humour, or minor elements of fear. Chat functionality will be turned off by default for children under nine. If communication is enabled, it can only happen with users specifically approved by a parent or guardian.
Meanwhile, Roblox Select accounts will allow access to games rated up to “Moderate,” and users in this group will be able to communicate with others within a similar age range.
Parents will also have additional control options. They can manually approve specific games that fall outside their child’s default access level. For instance, if a younger child wants to join an older sibling in a game that isn’t typically allowed under a Kids account, a parent can grant permission for that specific experience.
Both Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts will feature only games that pass the company's three-step screening system.
The first stage focuses on developer verification. Game creators must meet eligibility standards before their content can be considered for younger audiences. Developers under the age of 16 are required to complete identity verification or be linked to a parent account. In addition, their accounts must have two-factor authentication enabled.
Developers must also subscribe to Roblox Plus, a new membership plan launched recently at $4.99 per month. This subscription provides access to exclusive perks, discounts on in-game purchases, and other benefits. The company has also confirmed that its existing Roblox Premium subscription will no longer accept new users once Roblox Plus officially launches on April 30.
Following developer verification, the second stage involves real-time testing. Games are first evaluated by users aged 16 and above, who play them and provide feedback and reports. According to Roblox, this process helps assess the overall experience before making the games available to younger players. The platform also relies on its multimodal moderation systems to detect and prevent rule violations.
The final step ensures that games meet strict gameplay and content standards, including proper maturity labelling, before children and younger teens can access them.
These changes come amid increasing scrutiny over child safety on the platform. Roblox has faced several legal challenges in recent months, including lawsuits filed by the attorneys general of Louisiana and Texas. These cases were brought forward after concerns were raised that younger users were being exposed to harmful risks, including inappropriate content and potential grooming.
