Spotify Adds New Running Mode With Personalized Music and Audio Cues
Spotify is launching a new running mode for Premium users that creates personalized workout music based on running style, tempo and listening preferences.
Spotify is adding a new running mode to its mobile app that creates personalised music experiences based on different stages of a run, including a user’s preferred music and workout tempo.
The feature is available to Premium subscribers through Spotify’s Fitness Hub, where users can choose from 25 running presets.
Runners can select different workout styles, including interval runs, steady runs and pyramid workouts. They can also customise the duration of their session, preferred beats per minute and the type of music they want to hear.
Alongside music, Spotify’s running mode can provide audio cues corresponding to different stages of a workout. The audio cue feature is currently available only in English.
Spotify brings its playlist technology to running.
The new feature builds onSpotify’ss work with prompted playlists, which the streaming company has been testing over the past year.
Spotify said it noticed that many users were already using its playlist tools to create music collections specifically for workouts and fitness activities. Those listening habits helped inspire the development of a dedicated running experience.
The running mode can automatically select tracks based on a user’s musical preferences while matching songs to the tempo and structure of the chosen workout.
The feature represents another step in Spotify’s expansion into fitness-focused listening. Earlier this year, the company introduced fitness content through a partnership with connected fitness company Peloton.
Spotify arrives after Strava integration ended.
The launch also comes a few months after fitness platform Strava announced that Spotify would no longer be integrated directly into its Record feature.
Spotify’s new running mode instead brings more workout functionality directly into its own mobile application, giving subscribers a way to build structured running sessions without relying on a separate fitness app for music integration.
The feature begins rolling out Wednesday for Spotify Premium users on iOS in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.
