TikTok Adds Voice Notes and Image Sharing to Direct Messages
TikTok now lets users send 60-second voice notes and up to nine photos or videos in DMs, with new safety protections for teens and privacy reminders for all.
TikTok is expanding its messaging features, giving users new ways to connect beyond sharing short videos. The platform announced that it now supports voice notes and photo/video sharing in direct messages (DMs), available for both one-to-one and group chats.
Voice Notes in TikTok DMs
The new TikTok voice notes feature allows users to record and send audio messages up to 60 seconds long. This update brings TikTok closer to established messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and iMessage, which already offer voice note functionality.
Voice notes are especially popular with Gen Z, who increasingly use short audio clips as a casual and expressive form of communication. TikTok says the rollout will happen gradually over the coming weeks.
Sharing Images and Videos in Chats
In addition to audio, users can now send up to nine images or videos in TikTok DMs at once. Content can be captured directly with the camera or selected from the device gallery, with editing options available before sending.
For safety, TikTok has restricted photo and video sharing in first-time message requests. New contacts can only share existing TikTok content until the chat is accepted, helping prevent spam or unwanted images.
Enhanced Safety and Privacy Controls
TikTok continues to enforce safety protections in private chats:
- Under 16 users cannot use DMs at all.
- Ages 16–18 are protected by automated systems that detect and block inappropriate images, such as nudity. Blocked content won’t be delivered to the recipient, and senders will be prevented from resending.
- Adults over 18 can toggle these safety filters in their app settings.
In addition, TikTok displays privacy reminders when users share personal photos or videos, encouraging them to consider who they send content to.
TikTok’s Growing Messaging Ecosystem
The launch of voice notes and image sharing is part of TikTok’s larger push to position itself as more than just an entertainment app. Recent updates include:
- Group chats with up to 32 participants.
- Creator Chat Rooms for creators to directly engage with followers.
With these features, TikTok is moving closer to being a full-fledged social messaging platform, offering users familiar tools while strengthening its appeal to younger audiences who prioritize interactive communication.
Why It Matters
- Expands TikTok beyond short videos into everyday communication.
- Keeps pace with rivals like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat.
- Builds safer messaging environments for teens and young adults.
