Warner Music Group (WMG) announced on Wednesday that it has acquired AI attribution startup Sureel AI, which focuses on helping rights holders track how artificial intelligence systems use creative content. Sureel’s patented technology creates what it describes as “AI DNA” for songs, breaking music into individual components that can be analysed to determine how AI models interact with copyrighted works.

The acquisition is intended to help WMG better identify instances of its artists’ and songwriters’ music being used in AI-generated content or in the training of AI systems.

“Bringing Sureel into WMG strengthens our capability for protection, control and monetisation, ensuring that the creative community remains in control of its intellectual property, name, image, likeness, and voice,” WMG Chief Executive Robert Kyncl said in a statement.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 2022, Sureel offers intellectual property provenance, compliance reporting, auditing, model optimisation, and AI business intelligence services. The company also provides a name, image, and likeness (NIL) attribution platform that tracks how artists’ voices, likenesses, and performance identities are used in AI training and content generation, including voice cloning, AI-generated avatars, and style replication.

WMG said Sureel will continue operating as an independent platform serving the broader music and AI industries.

“Rightsholders deserve to know how AI interacts with their work, and to share fairly in the value it creates,” said Sureel founder and CEO Tamay Aykut. “With WMG’s backing, we can deliver on our mission at scale and help create a more transparent and fair ecosystem.”

The deal highlights Warner Music’s changing approach to artificial intelligence. After initially taking legal action against AI music startup Suno in 2024, the company later signed a licensing agreement with Suno that gave artists and songwriters greater control over how their names, voices, likenesses, and music are used in AI-generated works.

At the same time, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group continue to pursue major copyright infringement claims against AI music companies.

Warner Music also settled its lawsuit against AI music startup Udio last year and subsequently entered into a licensing partnership with the company.

The acquisition of Sureel further strengthens Warner Music’s efforts to balance AI innovation with intellectual property protection as generative AI becomes increasingly important across the music industry.
