X begins rollout of Grok-powered auto translation and image editing tools

X is introducing a new set of features designed to enhance how users interact with content on the platform, including automatic post translation and an upgraded image editor powered by xAI's Grok models. The updates reflect the company's broader effort to improve the overall in-app experience.

The automatic translation feature is now being rolled out globally. Announcing the update, X's head of product Nikita Bier said users will be able to view posts in their preferred language instantly. If needed, users can tap the settings icon on any translated post and turn off automatic translation for specific languages.

This strategy mirrors efforts seen across the social media landscape, where platforms aim to expand reach by making content accessible across language barriers. Reddit, for instance, has been testing machine translation features over the past few years as part of similar efforts.

In addition to translation, X is also launching a new image editor within its iOS app. The updated tool includes drawing and text features, allowing users to customise images directly within the platform. It also introduces a blur function to hide sensitive elements, such as faces or personal information like credit card numbers and Social Security details.

The platform is further expanding its AI capabilities by allowing users to edit images using natural-language prompts via Grok. For example, a user could request something like "display this photo as a painting in a museum," and the system will generate an edited version accordingly. X has said that these features will also be brought to Android devices in the near future.

The rollout comes after earlier controversies involving AI-generated imagery on the platform. This year, Elon Musk faced criticism from global authorities over concerns that users could manipulate others' images without their consent. In response, X restricted certain image-generation tools to paid subscribers. It remains unclear whether the newly introduced AI-powered image editing features will be subject to similar limitations.

Several major tech companies, including Google and Adobe, have also launched AI-based editing tools that allow users to describe desired image changes with simple text prompts, underscoring the increasing competition in this rapidly evolving space.
