YouTube tests AI search feature with guided answer results
YouTube is testing an AI-powered search feature that delivers guided answers, aiming to improve content discovery and user search experience.
YouTube is experimenting with a new AI-powered search capability designed to improve how users discover content, particularly for queries related to topics like recipes and travel planning. The feature introduces a more interactive approach by delivering structured, step-by-step responses that combine both text and video results.
Called “Ask YouTube,” the feature allows users to enter more detailed queries — for example, planning a multi-day trip — and receive a curated set of results that include written guidance, short-form clips, and longer videos. Instead of presenting only a list of videos, the system organises information into a more comprehensive format, highlighting relevant video segments, titles, and channel details to help users explore content more effectively.
The experience also supports follow-up questions, enabling users to refine their search. For instance, after receiving an initial travel plan, users can ask additional questions, such as where to find good coffee, and the system will respond with similarly structured suggestions that combine different media formats.
At this stage, the feature is being tested with YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States who are 18 years or older. Users who want to try the feature must opt in to the experiment. Google has indicated that it is working toward expanding access to a broader audience, including non-Premium users.
This development is part of Google’s broader effort to integrate AI-driven search experiences across its platforms. The company previously introduced an AI-focused search mode that allows users to ask complex, multi-part questions and continue conversations through follow-ups. More recent updates have added features such as side-by-side web browsing and tools for comparing product prices, and introduced Gemini’s Canvas functionality for managing ongoing tasks within AI-driven workflows. With the rollout of this feature on YouTube, Google may also explore new ways of presenting video content, including the potential integration of sponsored placements alongside AI-generated results.
