Apple Finally Delivers AI-Powered Siri, but the Moment Feels Less Revolutionary

Apple has finally delivered the AI-powered Siri it promised, bringing the upgraded assistant to the consumer beta of iOS 27 after several rounds of delays. The new version gives Siri a much broader understanding of users’ personal information, adds conversational AI capabilities, and lets the assistant perform a wider range of tasks across the iPhone.

Despite the long-awaited launch, the update arrives at a time when the artificial intelligence landscape has changed dramatically. Over the past few years, competing AI platforms have evolved beyond chatbots into coding assistants, autonomous agents and productivity tools capable of reasoning through complex tasks. Against that backdrop, Siri’s transformation feels less like a breakthrough and more like Apple finally catching up with expectations.

Even so, the new assistant delivers many of the features Apple originally promised. Users can now hold natural conversations with Siri instead of issuing one-off commands. The assistant also supports typed conversations and can be accessed through a dedicated app that remembers previous interactions.

Personal context becomes Siri’s biggest upgrade.

The most significant improvement is Siri’s ability to understand personal context. Rather than requiring users to remember where information is stored, the assistant can search across photos, emails, messages, contacts, calendars and other information saved on an iPhone.

For example, users can ask Siri to locate the last receipt stored on their device without specifying whether it was saved as an email, document or image. The assistant can also retrieve information contained inside photos, such as a driver’s license number from an image of a license or a QR code saved in a screenshot for future reference.

Siri is now able to open websites, launch applications and carry out actions such as getting directions, playing music, editing photos, drafting emails and opening audiobooks. Apple has also improved one of Siri’s long-standing weaknesses by making it consistently play the requested song, podcast or audiobook through the user’s preferred application.

AI extends beyond voice commands.

The assistant can also help users brainstorm ideas, explain unfamiliar topics and suggest recipes based on ingredients already available at home. It can answer questions about concerts, events and other local activities using location-based information.

Apple has integrated Siri into the iPhone camera experience as well, allowing users to ask questions about objects they are viewing or receive help with tasks such as splitting a restaurant bill.

Instead of directing users to web search results for many requests, Siri now provides direct answers while acting as a more capable digital assistant acrossApple’ss ecosystem.

Apple said the improvements were enabled through its partnership with Google, using Gemini AI models to help train and refine Apple’s own Foundation Models. Those models are designed to run on Apple silicon and the company’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.

While the upgraded Siri is significantly more capable than previous versions, its arrival follows years of rapid progress across the AI industry. As competitors continue expanding into autonomous software development, AI agents and advanced reasoning systems, Apple is introducing an assistant that finally performs many of the tasks users expected from Siri years ago.

For many users, that makes the release feel less like a revolutionary product launch and more like the completion of a long-overdue upgrade. Siri now functions as a modern AI assistant, but it enters a market where the definition of cutting-edge AI has already moved forward.

The enhanced Siri is currently available through the consumer beta of iOS 27. Apple is expected to release the software publicly in September, bringing the new AI assistant to all eligible iPhone users.
