Anthropic Confirms Biology Lab as It Expands AI Research Into Life Sciences

Anthropic has confirmed it operates a wet biology lab in the Bay Area, where it uses its AI models alongside physical experiments, expanding the company’s research beyond software development and into life sciences.

The company told Reuters that the lab conducts biological research with external partners and internal teams. Anthropic’s head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, said real laboratory work remains necessary for testing biological ideas generated with AI.

Anthropic Focuses on Fundamental Biology Research

Anthropic has not disclosed specific projects being conducted at the lab but said the focus is fundamental biology rather than directly developing drugs. The company previously acquired AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio as it expanded its life sciences efforts.

The company has also partnered with pharmaceutical companies, including Novo Nordisk, on drug discovery research. Anthropic has said it wants to support scientific work without appearing to compete with its industry partners.

To support this approach, Anthropic launched a Life Sciences Verification Program that provides approved biology researchers with access to its advanced AI models.

AI Safety Concerns Continue Alongside Expansion

Anthropic’s expansion into biology comes as the company continues to discuss the risks associated with advanced AI systems. CEO Dario Amodei has warned about potential misuse of AI, including risks related to biological threats.

The company has also faced criticism over its business decisions, with some observers questioning whether its products could compete with customers. Reports have highlighted growing debate around Anthropic’s strategy as it expands its technology offerings.

Anthropic has published research on AI-assisted biology, including work on accelerating protein design and improving biomolecular modelling.

The move has drawn mixed reactions from the technology community. Anthropic alignment researcher Evan Hubinger has discussed AI safety risks, while investor Chamath Palihapitiya commented on X about the company’s decision to operate a biology lab.
