YouTube TV’s multiview is getting a huge upgrade, letting viewers mix and match channels
YouTube TV is upgrading its multiview feature, allowing subscribers to mix and match channels, giving viewers more control over how they watch live sports, news, and events.
YouTube TV has been gradually expanding its multiview feature over the last few years. What began as a tool designed mainly for sports fans — letting them watch up to four channels at once on a single screen — is now evolving into something far more flexible. Soon, viewers will be able to create multiview setups using virtually any content they want.
In his annual letter released on Wednesday, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced that the service will soon roll out a “fully customizable multiview” experience. The goal of this upgrade is to deepen personalisation by allowing users to design their own multiview layouts, customising what appears on their screens based on their personal interests — whether that’s sports, news, entertainment, or a mix of everything.
YouTube TV introduced the multiview feature in 2023, initially focused exclusively on live sports broadcasts. The idea was to let fans follow multiple games simultaneously without switching channels. Over time, the feature was expanded to include additional content categories, such as news and weather. However, these early versions of multiview were limited to a predefined selection of channels, including CNN, MSNBC, HGTV, and Food Network.
More recently, YouTube TV began quietly testing a more open version of multiview with a small group of users. This experiment allowed participants to choose exactly which channels they wanted to watch side by side, without being confined to a preset list. The newly announced upgrade builds on that testing phase and brings full customization to a broader audience.
The enhanced multiview experience is expected to be especially appealing to families and larger households, where viewers may want to watch various types of content simultaneously. With this update, a single screen can accommodate a range of genres, making it easier for everyone to find something they enjoy without compromise.
Using multiview remains simple. To get started, viewers can press the down button on their remote control, look for the Multiview icon or the “Watch Multiview” option, and select it. From there, they can choose up to three additional live channels to display alongside their primary selection.
Alongside the multiview announcement, Mohan also pointed to another upcoming change aimed at giving subscribers more control over their viewing experience. YouTube TV plans to introduce genre-based channel packages, allowing users to pay only for the content they care about most. These packages could focus on specific categories such as sports, news, family-friendly programming, or general entertainment, offering a more tailored subscription model and lowering costs for some viewers.
That said, YouTube TV has not yet provided detailed information about these new packages, including pricing or an exact launch timeline. More clarity is expected in the months ahead as the platform moves closer to rolling out both the customizable multiview feature and the new subscription options.
