Android 16 Adds AI Notification Summaries, New Customization Options, and More

Google announced on Tuesday that it is rolling out a wide range of Android 16 updates, along with additional Android and accessibility improvements. These new Android 16 features — launching first on Pixel devices — represent a significant shift in Google’s update strategy, moving from a single annual release to a more frequent update model.

One of the headline additions in Android 16 is AI-powered notification summaries, which condense lengthy messages and active group chats into quick, easy-to-skim highlights. A new Notification Organiser will also automatically sort and mute lower-priority alerts, such as promotions, news updates, and social notifications.

The update introduces expanded personalisation tools, giving users access to custom icon shapes, themed icons, and a new option to force light-themed apps into dark mode, even if the app doesn’t support dark mode natively.

Android Settings is also gaining a new Parental Controls section. Parents can now set device screen time limits, create downtime periods, restrict app usage, and manage other controls directly through the system.

These features are now rolling out to supported Pixel models beginning Tuesday.

Google is additionally launching several general Android features that are not exclusive to Android 16. A new beta tool, Call Reason, allows users to tag calls to saved contacts as “urgent.” This label appears on the recipient’s incoming call screen, helping them understand the importance of the call. If the call is missed, the “urgent” note remains in the call history.

Another new addition is Expressive Captions, which show emotional context such as [sad] or [joyful] when detecting speech in video messages, social posts, and other media — useful for moments when the audio is muted.

Google is also making it easier to avoid unwanted group chats. If a user is added to a group by an unfamiliar number, they’ll now see a warning with key group details and can choose to reply, leave, block, or report the number with a single tap.

Chrome on Android is also being updated: Pinned tabs now behave as they do on desktop, staying anchored at the front of the browser so users can return to essential pages instantly.

In addition, Google is enhancing Circle to Search, the gesture-based search tool that lets users find information by circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping on content. Users can now analyse suspicious messages using this feature — after triggering Circle to Search, an AI Overview will indicate whether the message appears to be a scam.

For accessibility, Google is improving the voice dictation experience with TalkBack. Users will soon be able to activate dictation in Gboard using a two-finger double-tap. From there, Smart Dictation with Gemini will allow users to write and edit text using natural voice commands — for instance, “replace Monday with Tuesday” or “make it shorter.”

Google is also updating Guided Frame in the Pixel camera app. Previously, it alerted users when a face was detected. Now it will offer broader scene descriptions, such as: “One girl in a yellow T-shirt is sitting on the sofa looking at the dog.”

Voice Access — which lets users control their device entirely through voice — no longer requires touching the phone to activate. Users can now say, “Hey Google, start Voice Access,” to begin hands-free control.

Finally, Google is introducing Fast Pair support for hearing aids, starting with devices from Demant, the Danish company behind major brands like Oticon, Sonic, and Bernafon.
