Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Operates With Only One Direct Report

Most founders and executives leading rapidly growing technology companies manage large leadership teams. However, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei operates under a notably different structure, according to a recent interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang.

Amodei, who leads one of the fastest-growing AI companies in the world, revealed that he has only a single direct report: his chief of staff. The rest of Anthropic’s executive leadership team reports to his sister, co-founder and president Daniela Amodei, who oversees the company’s day-to-day operations.

The arrangement allows Amodei to devote most of his attention to long-term strategy, company culture, AI research, and broader discussions about the future impact of artificial intelligence. In the interview, he described the setup as “incredibly freeing,” noting that it reduces the time typically spent directly managing a large number of employees.

For many executives, personnel management can consume a significant portion of their schedule, often limiting the time available for product development, research priorities, and strategic planning. Anthropic’s leadership structure appears designed to allow Amodei to remain focused on those areas while operational responsibilities are handled elsewhere within the organisation.

The model stands out even among major AI companies. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly manages several direct reports, a more conventional approach among technology leaders. At the other end of the spectrum is Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who is known for overseeing dozens of direct reports.

As Anthropic continues its rapid growth, the company’s unconventional leadership structure offers a different approach to executive management in the increasingly competitive AI industry.
