Bluesky rolls out improved high-quality photo support
Bluesky introduces enhanced photo quality support, allowing users to share clearer, higher-resolution images across the decentralised social platform.
Bluesky is enhancing its social network with improved photo support, aiming to position itself as a stronger platform for visual content. Late Wednesday, the company announced a new version of its app (version 1.121), which improves image quality for posts by increasing both upload limits and rendering resolution.
Previously, Bluesky only allowed photo uploads of up to 1 MB. With the latest update, that limit has now been doubled to 2MB. Alongside this, images will now render at up to 4000px resolution, compared to the previous 2000px limit.
The platform has also introduced a redesigned image experience. Bluesky replaced its older image grid format with a swipeable carousel, which supports mixed aspect ratios without cropping images. However, early user feedback suggests that some users would prefer having the option to choose between a grid layout and a carousel format.
The update is expected to make Bluesky more competitive with other major social platforms such as X and Meta’s Threads.
Threads, in particular, has gained attention for its strong visual posting experience since its launch, partly due to its support for multiple aspect ratios and its carousel-style display, which allows users to present multi-image sequences more effectively. The feature even inspired external developers to create standalone tools to help users format panoramic images for Threads. (Threads still supports a higher maximum image size, although it is not clearly specified in its public documentation.)
