Anthropic Forms AI Chip Design Team to Build Custom Silicon

Anthropic is building a dedicated team to design its own custom AI chips, a move aimed at making its Claude models run faster and more efficiently as demand for its AI services continues to grow.

The company confirmed the plans after Business Insider first reported the development. Anthropic said its goal is to co-design AI hardware and models so they work together more efficiently. Last month, The Information reported that the startup had been exploring Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner for the chips.

The decision reflects the growing need for AI companies to secure long-term computing capacity. While Anthropic already has infrastructure partnerships with AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD, the company appears to be investing in custom silicon to support future growth better.

Following a broader industry trend

Anthropic joins a growing list of AI companies developing proprietary processors. OpenAI introduced its Broadcom-built Jalapeño inference chip in June, Google DeepMind relies on Alphabet’s TPU chips, and Meta has been developing its own MTIA AI accelerators.

Anthropic is already recruiting engineers for its new “custom silicon team,” according to a job listing, signalling that work on the company’s in-house AI chip programme is now underway.
