Roku Launches Labs Hub for Experimental Apps on Smart TVs

Roku is launching Labs, a new hub in Roku OS that allows U.S. users to access experimental apps directly from their TV home screens. The feature gives Roku a way to test new experiences while expanding its connected TV platform.

Roku Labs will initially include apps for weather updates, stock tracking, and Roku Dash, a game where users fly a UFO through Roku City, the company’s neon-themed screensaver world.

Roku expands TV features

The update also brings Roku’s personalised Home Screen to markets including Mexico and Brazil, with localised content recommendations and features. Roku Voice will be able to answer weather-related questions.

Roku is adding streaming subscription bundles in the U.S. and Mexico that combine services such as AMC+, Fox ONE, Hallmark+, Howdy, and Starz. The company is also open-sourcing the software behind its Roku LT OS remote to encourage outside developers to build new applications and devices.
