Cohere expands globally with German startup merger to build a transatlantic AI powerhouse
Cohere merges with a Germany-based startup to strengthen its global AI capabilities and build a powerful transatlantic presence in enterprise AI.
Cohere, the Canada-based enterprise AI unicorn, announced on Friday that it plans to merge with Germany-based enterprise AI firm Aleph Alpha.
The transaction has not yet been finalised, but reports indicate that the combined entity would be valued at approximately $20 billion. In addition, Schwarz Group, one of Aleph Alpha’s key backers, is expected to invest $600 million into Cohere as part of its upcoming Series E funding round, which is anticipated to close later this year.
The commercial AI sector remains largely dominated by a small group of Silicon Valley companies, with consolidation activity continuing to shape the competitive landscape.
According to a press release detailing the planned combination of Cohere and Aleph Alpha, a primary objective of the merger is to provide enterprises and government organisations with an alternative to the existing dominant technology platforms — one that emphasises greater independence and stronger control over data. The companies also aim to bring together talent from both Canada and Germany, positioning the newly formed organisation as a “transatlantic AI powerhouse.”
