Drone Package Delivery Is Becoming a Mainstream Logistics Solution
Wing’s drone delivery service is rapidly transforming last-mile logistics, offering faster deliveries, lower costs, and increased convenience for consumers and businesses worldwide.
Wing, the drone delivery company owned by Alphabet, is expanding its partnership with Walmart as it continues to scale autonomous delivery services for groceries, household items, and even beverages across the United States.
The latest expansion will bring Wing’s drone delivery service to seven additional U.S. markets. New cities include Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Salt Lake City. The move is part of a broader strategy to establish a drone-delivery network spanning more than 270 Walmart locations by next year, increasing the combined reach of Wing and Walmart to nearly 20 markets nationwide.
Wing already provides Walmart deliveries in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Greater Houston. The company has also announced future launches in Orlando, Tampa, Charlotte, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and Miami as it continues to expand its footprint.
Walmart has spent several years testing drone-based delivery services. Following successful deployments with Wing in Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta, the retailer significantly expanded its commitment to the technology. In January, the two companies revealed plans to extend on-demand drone delivery to an additional 150 Walmart stores.
The growing network highlights a broader trend: drone delivery is becoming more widely used by consumers than many realise. Wing has now completed more than one million commercial deliveries, including a substantial number carried out through its collaboration with Walmart.
Earlier this year, Wing Chief Business Officer Heather Rivera noted that the company’s most active customers are frequent users of the service. According to Rivera, the top 25% of customers place drone delivery orders about 3 times per week.
“Our work with Walmart has shown that drone delivery isn’t just a novelty; it’s a service many customers count on multiple times per week,” Rivera said in a statement announcing the latest market expansion.
