Gmail Launches Personalized AI Inbox and AI Search Overviews

Google is rolling out a new set of AI-powered features for Gmail, including a personalised AI Inbox, AI Overviews in search results, and a built-in proofreading tool. The company is also expanding access to several AI features that were previously limited to paying subscribers.

The new AI Inbox introduces a dedicated tab designed to help users stay on top of important tasks and updates. It is divided into two sections: “Suggested to-dos” and “Topics to catch up on.” The to-dos section highlights high-priority emails that require action, such as upcoming bill payments, appointment follow-up reminders, and address confirmations.

The “Topics to catch up on” section surfaces grouped updates from recent emails, such as order deliveries, returns in progress, or newly available financial statements. These updates are organised into categories such as Finances and Purchases to make them easier to scan.

“This is us delivering on Gmail proactively having your back, showing you what you need to do and when you need to do it,” said Blake Barnes, Google’s vice president of product, during a briefing with reporters. He emphasised that the traditional inbox will remain unchanged and that the AI Inbox is simply an optional view users can toggle on or off to reduce inbox clutter.

Google is initially releasing the AI Inbox to a group of trusted testers, with broader availability planned for the coming months.

Gmail search is also getting AI Overviews, allowing users to ask natural language questions instead of relying on keyword searches. For example, users can ask questions like who provided a specific service quote or when a particular conversation took place, and Gmail will generate a concise summary by pulling relevant details directly from stored emails.

Barnes said the system scans a user’s inbox to surface answers at the top of search results, similar to AI Overviews in Google Search, but noted that Gmail’s version relies exclusively on the user’s own emails. This feature is rolling out to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra.

Google reiterated that all AI features in Gmail are optional and that personal content is not used to train the company’s foundational AI models. The company said user data is processed in an isolated environment.

Another new feature, Proofread, is designed to help users refine their writing. Similar to services like Grammarly, the tool analyses draft emails and offers one-click suggestions to improve clarity, structure, word choice, conciseness, and sentence construction. It can suggest simpler phrasing, flag incorrect word usage, and help convert passive language into active voice. Proofread is also rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

In addition to the newly announced tools, Google said it is expanding access to several existing AI features. Help Me Write, AI Overviews for threaded emails, and Suggested Replies are now becoming available to all Gmail users after previously being limited to paid tiers.

Help Me Write assists with composing emails from short prompts; AI Overviews for threaded emails summarise long conversations; and Suggested Replies generate context-aware responses that match the tone and style of the ongoing exchange.

Together, the updates mark Google’s continued push to integrate AI more deeply into Gmail while keeping its core email experience intact.
