Google Photos’ latest feature lets you meme yourself
Google Photos has introduced a new AI-powered feature called “Me Meme” that lets users create memes from their own photos, with a rollout starting in the U.S.
Google Photos is getting a playful new upgrade that lets users turn themselves into memes. On Thursday, Google introduced a generative AI-powered feature called “Me Meme,” which allows people to combine a meme-style template with a photo of themselves to create a custom image.
The feature will initially roll out to users in the United States. It was first spotted in development by Android Authority last October and was officially announced this week on Google’s Photos Community site.
The "Me meme" feature which I spotted back in October 2025 is finally announced by Google.
This is an experimental feature which will be available first for users in US only 😐

Google says the tool is still experimental, warning that AI-generated results “may not perfectly match the original photo.” To achieve better results, the company recommends uploading images that are well lit, well-focused, and taken from the front.
The new addition is designed mainly as a lighthearted way for users to explore their photo libraries while experimenting with Google’s Gemini AI technology, specifically its Nano Banana image model. That same model already powers other AI features inside Google Photos, such as tools that let users re-create photos in different visual styles, including cartoons or paintings.
While the feature is not intended to be taken too seriously, it serves a strategic purpose. Fun AI tools like this encourage users to keep returning to the Photos app to experiment, rather than turning to competing products. People also tend to be especially drawn to AI features that let them insert themselves into edited images, something OpenAI has highlighted with the popularity of its Sora app, which allows users to generate AI videos featuring themselves and their friends.
“Me Meme” is not yet available to everyone, so it may not appear immediately in the Google Photos app even after updating. Once it rolls out, Google says the feature will live under the “Create” tab. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch that the tool will reach U.S. users on both iOS and Android devices over the coming weeks.
To use Me Meme, Memeers can choose an existing template or upload their own, then tap “add photo,” then “Generate.” Google notes that new templates will continue to be added over time. After the image is created, users can save it, share it on other platforms, or select “regenerate” to have the AI produce a different version of the same meme.
