Google Translate introduces new pronunciation practice feature
Google Translate now offers pronunciation practice tools to help users improve their speaking skills with real-time feedback and interactive learning.
Google Translate has reached its 20-year milestone, and to mark the occasion, Google has introduced a new feature designed to help users improve how they speak translated words and phrases across different languages.
With this addition, when a user translates any word, sentence, or phrase, they can access a new “Practice” section within the app. Inside this section, a “Pronounce” option appears, providing phonetic guidance that users can read aloud to practice saying the translated content more accurately.
After the user speaks, the app evaluates their pronunciation and delivers feedback. For example, it may indicate that certain sounds were not clearly articulated, helping users understand where improvement is needed. In addition, users can listen to the app’s own pronunciation of the translated text, allowing them to compare their speech with the correct version.
The feature is currently being rolled out in the United States and India, with support for English, Spanish, and Hindi at launch. More languages may be added over time as the functionality expands.
This new capability brings the experience closer to language-learning tools such as Duolingo, particularly by encouraging users to practice speaking rather than just reading or listening actively.
The pronunciation feature follows another recent update from Google. Last month, the company introduced its live headphone translation feature to iOS devices. It expanded availability on Android across multiple countries, including Germany, Spain, France, Nigeria, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, Bangladesh, and Thailand.
