Google has announced a major update to Google Vids, introducing AI-generated personal avatars and new video creation capabilities powered by its Gemini Omni model. The new features allow users to create customised digital avatars that look and sound like them using a selfie and a short voice recording.

Alongside personal avatars, Google is bringing Gemini Omni to Vids, enabling users to generate videos from a combination of written prompts and reference images. The AI model can blend those inputs to create a video, while also performing edits such as replacing backgrounds, improving lighting in smartphone recordings and adding visual effects.

Google has also added step-by-step editing, allowing users to refine AI-generated videos without having to recreate an entire project each time they want to make a change.

The latest additions expand Google Vids beyond its original purpose as an AI-assisted presentation tool for workplaces. By integrating these capabilities into Google Workspace, the company is positioning Vids as a broader business video platform for training materials, internal communications, and other professional content. The new features also place Google in closer competition with AI video platforms such as HeyGen, Synthesia, Captions and D-ID.

To address authenticity concerns, Google said personal avatars will be linked to the creator’s Google account and protected with invisible SynthID watermarking. Access to avatar creation will also be limited to users aged 18 or older in supported regions.

The announcement reflects Google’s continued investment in AI-powered creative tools as it expands Gemini’s capabilities across its productivity applications.
