Generalist Robotics Startup Reaches $3 Billion Valuation After New Funding
Robotics startup Generalist has reached a $3 billion valuation after raising nearly $200 million in new funding led by 8VC, sources say.
Generalist, a robotics startup developing artificial intelligence models for robots, has reached a $3 billion valuation after raising additional capital, according to people familiar with the funding.
The company raised nearly $200 million in new funding led by 8VC, according to two sources with knowledge of the deal. The investment extends Generalist’s $400 million Series B round announced in June, which Radical Ventures led at a $2 billion valuation.
The additional funding brings the total size of the Series B round to approximately $600 million. Generalist and 8VC did not respond to requests for comment.
Generalist Builds AI Foundation Model for Robots
Generalist was founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, along with former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry.
The startup received early backing from investors including 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions and AI researcher Fei-Fei Li. Until recently, the company operated with limited public attention as it developed its robotics technology.
Generalist is building an AI foundation model designed to work across different types of robots. The company says its Gen 1.5 model allows robots to learn new tasks from short video demonstrations lasting between 3 and 12 seconds.
The startup is currently working with a small group of customers and using their feedback to adapt the model for specific applications, according to one source familiar with the company’s work.
Competition Grows Around General Robotics AI
Generalist is competing in a growing field of companies attempting to create general-purpose AI systems for robots. Other startups pursuing similar goals include Physical Intelligence and Skild AI.
Physical Intelligence has reportedly reached an $11 billion valuation, while SoftBank-backed Skild AI has been valued at $14 billion. Genesis AI was also reportedly in discussions to raise funding at a $3 billion valuation.
Investors backing these companies are betting that robotics could eventually achieve a breakthrough similar to the impact large language models had on generative AI. The goal is to create robots that can perform a wider range of tasks without requiring separate training for every individual action.
However, developing general robotics models remains challenging. Unlike large language models, which can learn from vast amounts of internet data, robots require physical-world training data and interactions that are harder to collect at scale.
Some venture investors have warned that truly general-purpose robotics systems may still be years away, even as funding continues to increase across the sector.
