London Set for a Robotaxi Battle as Uber, Wayve, and Waymo Expand Autonomous Ride Services
London is emerging as a major robotaxi testing ground, with Uber partnering with Wayve and Waymo preparing its UK launch. Discover how autonomous ride-hailing services could reshape urban transportation in the British capital.
Uber users in the U.K. can now sign up for an interest list that could improve their chances of being matched with a Wayve autonomous vehicle, signalling that the two companies are moving closer to launching a robotaxi service in London. When the service eventually debuts, Uber is expected to face direct competition from Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous driving company and the current leader in the U.S. robotaxi market.
The announcement was made in London, where Uber showcased a black Ford Mustang Mach-E equipped with Wayve’s self-driving technology. While Wayve provides the autonomous driving system, Uber has focused on the rider experience, including interactive in-vehicle touchscreens that support 64 different languages.
Although Uber has repeatedly hinted at the upcoming launch, the company has not revealed a firm timeline, saying only that the service is expected to arrive in the coming months, subject to regulatory approval. Once available, riders using the Uber app may be paired with a Wayve autonomous vehicle at the same fare as a standard ride.
Users who wish to increase their chances of receiving an autonomous vehicle can update their rider preferences within the Uber app and select autonomous vehicles as a preferred option. Customers who are matched with a robotaxi still decline the ride and request a human-driven vehicle instead. Initially, the Wayve fleet will operate with trained safety drivers behind the wheel before eventually transitioning to fully driverless operations.
At the same time, Waymo is expanding its presence in London. The company began testing autonomous vehicles with human safety operators in April and currently operates around 100 Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis across a 100-square-mile testing area in the city.
The developing competition is particularly notable because Uber and Waymo continue to maintain a partnership in the United States. The two companies, once involved in a high-profile legal dispute over trade secrets, began working together in 2023 when Waymo vehicles became available through Uber’s platform in Phoenix. However, the partnership has remained somewhat limited, as customers in Phoenix can also request Waymo rides directly through Waymo’s own app.
The relationship expanded further in 2025 when Waymo vehicles were added to Uber’s platform in Austin and later in Atlanta. In those cities, customers can only access Waymo robotaxis through Uber, rather than through a dedicated Waymo app.
Despite the partnership, signs of competition have become increasingly visible. Uber has invested in numerous autonomous vehicle companies, including Wayve, while company executives have occasionally criticised Waymo publicly. Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli recently shared comments on social media highlighting what he described as unsafe behaviour by a Waymo robotaxi.
Uber has also established dedicated autonomous vehicle divisions, including AV Labs and Uber Autonomous Solutions, reflecting the company’s broader ambitions within the self-driving transportation sector.
Wayve remains one of Uber’s most significant autonomous vehicle investments. Earlier this year, the U.K.-based startup secured $1.2 billion in funding from several strategic investors, including Uber. The total investment package could reach $1.5 billion if deployment milestones tied to robotaxi operations in London are achieved.
Regulation may ultimately determine how quickly the competition unfolds. The U.K. government is still developing its framework for autonomous vehicle operations and recently opened applications for companies interested in participating in a national pilot programme. Officials have said the findings from these trials will help shape future autonomous vehicle regulations across the country.
