Netflix’s Frankenstein dominates Oscars with three wins, KPop Demon Hunters takes two
Netflix’s Frankenstein secures three Oscars while KPop Demon Hunters wins two, highlighting strong performances across major categories at this year’s Academy Awards.
Two Netflix productions — “Frankenstein” and “KPop Demon Hunters” — emerged as multiple award winners at tonight’s Academy Awards ceremony.
Guillermo del Toro’s reinterpretation of “Frankenstein” earned three Oscars, taking home awards for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Meanwhile, “KPop Demon Hunters,” which has become Netflix’s most-watched film of all time, won Best Animated Feature as well as Best Original Song.
In recent years, streaming platforms have maintained a strong presence at the Oscars, with films like “Roma,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” securing major honours. Despite this momentum, the industry’s top prize has largely remained elusive for Netflix. To date, Apple’s “CODA,” released during the peak of the pandemic, remains the only streaming-produced film to win Best Picture.
During the ceremony, host Conan O’Brien acknowledged Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos in the audience, joking, “This is exciting: It’s his first time in the theatre!”
“Frankenstein” received a total of nine nominations, including nods for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor. Other Best Picture nominees included Netflix’s “Train Dreams” and Apple’s “F1,” which won Best Sound. However, the Best Picture award ultimately went to “One Battle After Another.”
