OpenAI CEO issues apology to Tumbler Ridge community

Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, issued an apology to residents of Tumbler Ridge, expressing regret that the company did not notify law enforcement about a suspect connected to a recent mass shooting.

In a letter addressed to the community, Altman said he was “deeply sorry” that OpenAI had not alerted authorities earlier regarding the individual involved. The incident followed reports that police had identified 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar as a suspected shooter in an attack that allegedly left eight people dead.

According to earlier reporting, OpenAI had flagged and banned the suspect’s ChatGPT account in June 2025 after the user described scenarios involving gun-related violence. While company staff internally discussed whether to inform law enforcement, no action was taken at that time. Authorities in Canada were only contacted after the shooting had already occurred.

OpenAI has since stated that it is working to strengthen its safety measures. These updates include introducing more flexible criteria for determining when accounts should be referred to authorities and establishing direct communication channels with Canadian law enforcement agencies.

In his letter, which was first published in a local outlet, Altman noted that he had spoken with Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka and British Columbia Premier David Eby. He said there was agreement that a public apology was necessary, while also recognising the importance of allowing time for the community to grieve.

“I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June,” Altman wrote. “While I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognise the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered.”

Altman added that OpenAI’s priority moving forward will be to work with government bodies at different levels to help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

In a statement shared on X, Premier David Eby described the apology as necessary but insufficient given the scale of the tragedy and the impact on the families affected in Tumbler Ridge.

Canadian officials have indicated they are reviewing potential new regulations related to artificial intelligence, although no final decisions have been announced.
