OpenAI unveils GPT-5.5, moving closer to an all-in-one AI platform

OpenAI on Thursday released GPT-5.5, its latest artificial intelligence model, which the company describes as its “smartest and most intuitive to use model” so far. The new system brings expanded capabilities across multiple domains, and OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said it also represents another step toward the company’s broader vision of building a “super app.”

During a call with journalists, Brockman said the model marks progress “towards more agentic and intuitive computing.”

“This model is a real step forward towards the kind of computing that we expect in the future — but it is one step, and we expect to see many in the future,” Brockman said. “It’s a faster, sharper thinker for fewer tokens compared to something like 5.4. So this means that there’s just more frontier AI available for businesses and for consumers, which is part of our goal.”

He also linked GPT-5.5 to OpenAI’s longer-term ambition to build a unified “super app” — a multi-purpose platform akin to a digital Swiss Army knife. Brockman and co-founder Sam Altman have previously discussed combining ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI browser into a single system aimed at enterprise and consumer use. The idea mirrors broader industry ambitions, including those of Elon Musk, who has spoken about turning X into a super app.

OpenAI has been releasing models at a rapid pace, with the previous launch coming just last month, and earlier updates in December and November. Company researchers say this pace is expected to continue.

“We see pretty significant improvements in the short term, extremely significant improvements in the medium term,” said Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist. “In fact, I would say, like, I think the last two years have been surprisingly slow.”

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 is designed for a wide range of applications, including enterprise use cases such as agentic coding and knowledge work, as well as more advanced scientific and mathematical tasks. The company also shared benchmark results showing improved performance compared to previous versions and rival models from Google and Anthropic, including Gemini 3.1 Pro and Claude Opus 4.5.

Competition with Anthropic remains a key theme in the AI industry. During the briefing, one question compared GPT-5.5 to Mythos, Anthropic’s recently announced cybersecurity tool, which has faced scrutiny following reports of unauthorised access. Mia Glaese, a member of OpenAI’s technical team, said that GPT-5.5 would help strengthen the company’s cybersecurity approach.

“We have a strong and longstanding strategy for our approach to cyber, and we’ve refined a durable approach to rolling out models safely,” Glaese said.

Mark Chen, OpenAI’s chief research officer, added that GPT-5.5 shows improved ability to handle complex computing tasks and delivers “meaningful gains on scientific and technical research workflows,” potentially supporting areas such as drug discovery, which has become an increasing focus across the industry.

OpenAI confirmed that GPT-5.5 is now widely available. The model is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT, while GPT-5.5 Pro is being made available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers.
