Sora for Android saw nearly half a million installs on its first day
OpenAI’s Sora app hit 470,000 downloads on its first day on Android — over four times its iOS debut — as global users rush to try the AI-powered video creation platform.
OpenAI’s Sora Hits 470,000 Downloads on First Day of Android Launch
Sora, the AI-powered video creation app from OpenAI, has made a strong debut on Android, amassing an estimated 470,000 downloads on its first day across supported markets, according to data from Appfigures.
That makes the Android rollout more than four times larger than Sora’s iOS launch, with 327% more installs (360,000 additional downloads). However, Appfigures notes that the comparison isn’t exactly like-for-like: the iOS version was initially available only in the U.S. and Canada, and was limited to invite-only access.
Wider Global Rollout Boosts Numbers
The Android version of Sora launched in seven markets — including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam — and crucially, OpenAI removed the invite requirement in late October for top regions.
The broader availability helped fuel an explosive first day on the Google Play Store, signalling strong ongoing demand for AI-generated video tools.

iOS Momentum Still Strong
Sora’s iOS app, which launched earlier this year, became an instant hit despite its restricted access. Within its first week, it surpassed one million downloads and rose to the top of the App Store charts, where it remains ranked No. 4 among Top Free iPhone Apps in the U.S.
Sora allows users to generate videos from text prompts or animate themselves and friends through a feature called Cameos. Like TikTok, the app utilises a scrollable vertical feed to showcase videos created by other community members.
Updated Download Estimates
Appfigures also revised its earlier estimates for Sora’s iOS debut, adjusting its first-day figure from 56,000 to approximately 110,000 downloads, with 69,300 installs coming from the U.S.
By comparison, Sora’s Android version garnered 296,000 downloads in the U.S. alone, out of a total of 470,000 installs, indicating that the app continues to attract substantial interest even months after its initial release.
Rising Competition in AI Video Apps
Sora’s Android success arrives just as Meta AI expands its own presence in the space, rolling out its standalone mobile app for European users after an earlier U.S. launch.
With OpenAI’s Sora, Meta’s AI video tools, and a growing ecosystem of generative media apps, the battle for dominance in AI-powered video creation is intensifying across mobile platforms.
