Spotify rolls out group chats
Spotify has introduced group chats, allowing users to share playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks with up to 10 people as the platform expands its social features.
After introducing one-to-one messaging last August, Spotify is expanding its social features with the launch of group chats. The company announced this week that users can now share the podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks they’re listening to with groups of up to 10 people.
Group chats are not entirely open-ended. Users can only start a conversation with people they’ve previously shared content with on Spotify. For instance, if users already collaborate on a playlist or have participated together in features like Jam or Blend, they can open a group chat.
The update reflects Spotify’s continued push to make its streaming platform more social. Over time, the company has steadily layered in social features, including the ability to follow other users, see what they’re listening to, and comment on podcasts.
Spotify has previously emphasised that its in-app messaging tools are designed to complement, not replace, sharing music and audio through external messaging platforms and social networks.
From a privacy standpoint, Spotify said messages are encrypted both at rest and while in transit. However, the chats do not use end-to-end encryption.
