Tesla enters the UK energy market as a utility, challenging Octopus Energy
Tesla has launched as a registered electricity supplier in the UK, entering the retail energy market and setting up direct competition with Octopus Energy.
Tesla has officially become a licensed utility in the United Kingdom, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal. The automotive and energy company recently obtained a license from the Office for Gas and Electricity Markets, allowing it to sell electricity directly to households as well as to commercial and industrial customers.
The company has been involved in electricity markets for years. Its first dedicated energy products, the Powerwall and Powerpack, were introduced in 201. Still, it was not until Tesla’s merger with SolarCity a year later that the business began scaling more aggressively. In 2022, Tesla launched Tesla Energy in Texas, allowing it to sell electricity directly to consumers there. Owners of Powerwall batteries can also sell electricity from those systems as part of the company’s virtual power plant.
The new U.K. operation, called Tesla Energy Ventures, will now compete with established utilities in the country, including EDF, E.ON, and Octopus Energy. The rivalry with Octopus may be especially notable. Since its founding in 2015, Octopus has grown into the largest utility in the U.K. by emphasising polished software, renewable energy, and inventive marketing — a strategy that may sound familiar.
