Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky prepares to launch a dedicated AI research lab
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is planning a new AI lab to develop innovative artificial intelligence technologies that could transform travel and hospitality services.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky appears ready to move beyond simply supporting the artificial intelligence ecosystem and is now preparing to back an AI research lab of his own. Bloomberg first reported the development, and it was later confirmed by a person familiar with the matter. The move places Chesky among a growing group of prominent Silicon Valley leaders who believe there is still significant room for improvement in the capabilities and direction of today’s frontier AI models.
Although Airbnb has incorporated AI-powered coding tools into parts of its operations, Chesky indicated last year that the company had not entered into a major large language model partnership because he felt the available technology had not yet reached the level of maturity required for broader deployment.
Despite his reservations, Chesky has maintained close connections within the artificial intelligence community. His relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dates back to 2006 when both became involved with Y Combinator, the startup accelerator that helped launch Airbnb.
Over the years, the two remained in contact. As OpenAI experienced rapid growth and emerged as one of the most influential AI companies in the world, Chesky reportedly met regularly with Altman, offering guidance on navigating the challenges of leading a hypergrowth technology company.
Chesky’s involvement extended beyond informal advice. Reports have previously suggested that he was considered a potential member of OpenAI’s board. He also played a notable role during one of the most dramatic moments in the company’s history when Altman was removed as CEO by OpenAI’s board over concerns regarding transparency and communication.
During that period, Chesky reportedly advised Altman on public relations strategy and worked behind the scenes to build support among influential figures throughout Silicon Valley. His efforts contributed to the wave of support that ultimately led to Altman returning to leadership at OpenAI.
Now, however, Chesky appears poised to step into a more direct role within the artificial intelligence sector, potentially creating competition for the same companies and leaders he has previously supported.
At this stage, details regarding the focus of the proposed AI lab remain limited. According to Bloomberg’s report, the initiative may concentrate on user interaction, interface design, and related areas. These are subjects Chesky has consistently emphasised throughout his leadership at Airbnb, where product design and user experience have long been central priorities.
The direction bears some similarities to efforts underway elsewhere in the industry. Entrepreneur Brett Adcock, for example, launched Hark last year to create a new user interface paradigm for AI assistants. While Hark is also exploring hardware products, both projects appear to share an interest in rethinking how people interact with increasingly capable AI systems.
Importantly, Chesky is not expected to take over day-to-day leadership of the new lab. According to a source familiar with the plans, he will remain focused on his responsibilities as Airbnb’s chief executive and will not personally run the research operation.
Instead, the lab will likely be led by a separate executive team, which will face the challenge of competing in an increasingly crowded AI landscape populated by well-funded research organisations and established technology companies. The person leading the initiative will need to navigate competition from leading AI labs and work closely with a founder known for high standards and a hands-on approach to product development.
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the technology industry, Chesky’s decision to back a dedicated AI research effort highlights how influential technology leaders are increasingly looking beyond existing platforms and models to pursue breakthroughs. Whether the lab focuses on user experiences, interface innovation, or broader AI research, its launch signals that Chesky intends to play a more active role in shaping the next phase of the AI era while continuing to lead Airbnb.
