VLC Media Player Surpasses 7 Billion Downloads Worldwide

VLC media player has surpassed 7 billion downloads across all platforms, marking another milestone for the free and open-source multimedia software developed by the non-profit organisation VideoLAN.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president and lead developer of VLC, shared the update in an email. The milestone comes about 18 months after VLC crossed 6 billion downloads in January 2025.

VLC Expands Support for New Platforms

VideoLAN recently brought VLC to Amazon’s Vega OS for TVs and continues working on support for additional platforms and codecs. The organisation is also developing VLC 4, though the next major release is still in progress.

VideoLAN previously showcased AI-powered translation and subtitle features using local AI models, but it has not confirmed whether those capabilities have been released.

The latest milestone highlights VLC’s continued popularity as a free alternative for users who want offline media playback without subscription requirements.
