Figma Launches Specs and New AI Agent Tools at Config India 2026
Figma introduces Specs, a Markdown editor for design rules and AI agents, alongside code layers in public beta and Payload integration at Config India 2026.
Figma has introduced new tools to help AI agents follow company design standards as they build software. Announced at its first Config event in India, the updates include a Markdown-based editor called Figma Specs, expanded design system controls, interactive code layers and integration with the Payload content management system.
The changes aim to make AI-generated designs more consistent by giving agents access to established guidelines, reusable components and technical context rather than relying entirely on individual prompts.
Figma Specs Brings Design Guidelines Into the Canvas
Figma Specs lets teams document design requirements in Markdown, creating a shared reference for designers, developers, and AI agents. Specs can exist as standalone files or directly alongside designs on the Figma canvas.
Users can reference existing design elements, embed FigJam diagrams and incorporate code layers to connect written requirements with visual work. Figma is also introducing ways to bring design libraries, code repositories and guidelines together, helping agents work within a company’s established design system.
The company recently expanded access to its on-canvas AI agent. These additional controls are intended to reduce inconsistent results when agents generate or modify designs. Specs and design guidelines are entering open beta, while library code sources remain in closed beta.
Code Layers and Payload Expand Figma’s Development Tools
Figma is moving code layers into public beta after introducing the feature privately in June. Code layers allow teams to create interactive prototypes backed by executable code directly on the canvas. Users can also instruct Figma’s AI agent to convert designs into code or modify existing code to explore different interactions.
Figma chief design officer Loredana Crisan said AI has dramatically increased code production without a comparable rise in software releases. She noted that much of this additional code is being used to explore product ideas rather than build finished applications.
Figma is also integrating Payload into Figma Make, allowing users to generate websites with content management and backend capabilities. The company acquired the open-source CMS developer in 2025 and said Payload downloads have increased sixfold over the past year.
Support for more than 20 additional tools through Figma’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration will also expand connections with external AI systems, including OpenCode, Dia, Grok and India’s Sarvam AI.
India Becomes an Important Market for Figma
Figma opened its first Indian office in late 2025, establishing local sales, partnerships and product support operations. The company says India is its largest user market outside the United States.
Figma also reports that 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange use its platform. Its latest releases reflect a broader effort to connect design, AI-assisted development and content management within a shared working environment.
