The Emmy Awards will move from traditional broadcast television to Prime Video beginning in 2027, ending decades of rotation among major U.S. networks. Amazon said the six-year agreement will make Prime Video the ceremony’s exclusive global home.

Under the Prime Video agreement, the Emmys will stream live in more than 240 countries and territories. Viewers will not need an Amazon Prime subscription to watch.

Emmys end decades-long network rotation

The deal marks the first time the Emmy Awards will remain with one platform for an extended period. For roughly seven decades, the ceremony rotated among ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

The shift comes as more television viewing moves to streaming services. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC attracted 6.87 million viewers, down nearly 10% from the previous year, according to the Associated Press. That audience was still well above the ceremony’s record low of 4.3 million viewers in January 2024.

Other major awards shows are also moving online

The Emmys are part of a broader shift toward streaming for major entertainment ceremonies. Netflix has carried the Screen Actors Guild Awards since 2024, while the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has agreed to let YouTube begin streaming the Oscars in 2029.

Financial terms of the Amazon deal were not disclosed. Prime Video will begin carrying the Emmys in 2027 and retain the rights for six years.
