Etched Fields Funding Offers at Valuations as High as $50 Billion
AI chip startup Etched is reportedly reviewing investment offers valuing it at $40-$50 billion, weeks after its $21 billion funding round.
AI chip startup Etched is reportedly reviewing investment offers that could value the company between $40 billion and $50 billion, only weeks after it raised $700 million at a $21 billion valuation.
The fundraising discussions are still early, and the terms could change, or no deal may ultimately happen. Etched has declined to comment on the talks.
Etched is spending heavily to challenge Nvidia
Etched is building complete AI hardware systems around chips designed specifically for inference, the process of running trained AI models to respond to user requests. That is a capital-intensive strategy, which helps explain why the company could consider another large financing so soon after its previous round.
Etched says it has developed custom components intended to increase inference speed and reduce cost compared with general-purpose AI accelerators. The company has claimed its systems can process more tokens faster and more efficiently than Nvidia hardware, although those performance claims remain company-reported.
Jane Street led Etched’s recent $700 million financing and is also an early customer. Etched said in July that it had secured about $1 billion in customer orders after producing a test chip at a TSMC facility.
Investor interest follows rapid infrastructure expansion
Etched has been expanding beyond chip design into the infrastructure needed to sell complete systems. It operates a 10-megawatt data centre in Silicon Valley and has established a presence in Taiwan to coordinate manufacturing near TSMC.
The startup has also recruited heavily from Nvidia. The Wall Street Journal reported that roughly 15% of Etched’s workforce of about 400 people previously worked at the chipmaker.
Etched’s valuation has climbed rapidly
Gavin Uberti and Chris Zhu founded the company after meeting while studying advanced mathematics at Harvard, along with Robert Wachen. The founders left school to build the company around specialised AI inference hardware.
Etched announced a $300 million round at a $10.3 billion valuation in July, followed by the $700 million financing at $21 billion in September. The new offers, if accepted at the reported levels, would represent another sharp increase in valuation
