Audible Adds AI-Powered Interactive Stories and Character Guides
Audible introduces AI-powered interactive stories, real-time character guides and visual extras designed to make audiobook listening more immersive.
Audible is testing new technology designed to make audiobooks more interactive, including AI-powered conversations with characters, real-time character guides and visual extras tied to places and subjects mentioned in a book.
The Amazon-owned audiobook company is introducing the features on a limited number of titles before expanding them more broadly. One of the first books to receive additional visual and contextual material is The Cultural Tutor’s Grand Tour, which explores European history, art, architecture and culture.
Character guides aim to make audiobooks easier to follow
Audible is also adding a character guide to its October 1 production of Dracula. The feature identifies who is speaking directly on the player screen and provides spoiler-free character cards with information about the performers behind each voice.
The title is part of Audible Originals, a label covering productions created by Audible’s studios, including audiobooks, podcasts, performances and exclusive series.
Audible says listeners will eventually be able to ask the character guide questions about a story while they listen. The feature is also being introduced for Audible’s production of George Orwell’s 1984 and the forthcoming Exoplanet from writer Benjamin Percy and executive producer Andy Weir.
Generative AI lets listeners interact with characters
A separate interactive stories feature will allow listeners to participate in bonus experiences involving characters from selected titles. In Dracula, generative AI powers an interaction with Renfield, Dracula’s servant.
The character begins by assigning the listener a role, goal and set of stakes. The listener can then respond in their own words, with the character reacting in real time.
Audible says creators help establish the foundations of these experiences so AI-generated interactions remain grounded in the source material. The company plans to bring the same feature to Exoplanet.
Audible expands as audiobook demand grows
Audiobook demand continues to rise as publishers and authors increasingly embrace audio-first formats. U.S. audiobook sales rose 9% in 2025 to $2.43 billion.
Continued growth in the U.S. audiobook market gives Audible more incentive to experiment with features that move listening beyond traditional narration.
Audible Chief Content Officer Rachel Ghiazza said the new tools are meant to let listeners engage with stories in ways that weren’t previously possible, while keeping creators involved in how those experiences are built.
The character guides, interactive stories and visual extras remain in beta, with Audible planning to expand them to more titles over time.
