Mistral AI has released Mistral Large 4, a 1-trillion-parameter multimodal model nicknamed “Le Chonk.” The model is initially available through a controlled public endpoint while Mistral completes safety testing before releasing its weights.

Mistral Large 4 arrives as Europe looks to maintain its own capabilities in advanced AI development. French President Emmanuel Macron has described that broader approach as a “third way” in AI, distinct from relying entirely on closed U.S. systems or open models developed elsewhere.

Mistral plans an open-weight release after safety testing

Although Mistral Large 4 is not yet open weight, the company plans to make the model weights available after a short safety-testing period. Mistral executives said the interim period will be used to work with trusted partners and governments on safeguards intended to reduce malicious use while preserving the benefits of an auditable model.

Mistral has previously outlined its commitment to sovereign and open-weight AI, particularly for governments, enterprises and institutions that want greater control over deployment and inspection. CEO Arthur Mensch also highlighted the model’s launch in a public post.

Training used 4,000 Nvidia GPUs

Mistral said Large 4 was trained entirely on its own compute infrastructure using about 4,000 Nvidia GPUs. Vice President of Science Pierre Stock said that was two to three times fewer GPUs than some Chinese competitors use and significantly fewer than certain closed-model developers.

The company is focusing the model on workloads important to enterprise customers, including cybersecurity, finance and chip design. Mistral researchers have also discussed the technical direction behind its recent model development.

Enterprise use cases connect with major backers

Chip design is particularly relevant to Mistral’s relationship with ASML, the Dutch semiconductor equipment company that entered a strategic partnership with Mistral AI. Samsung has also backed the company as Mistral expands its enterprise and infrastructure ambitions.

Large 4 gives Mistral a new flagship model as it prepares to release the weights more broadly. The next test will be how its performance compares with leading open and closed systems once fuller benchmark results and wider access are available.
